Freight Coordinator

Reporting to the COO

As a Freight Coordinator, you are responsible for managing timely shipments to and from our many warehouse locations, expanding and developing our network of freight vendors, negotiating rates and reducing overall freight spend, and maintaining accurate data/reports.

The essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

  • Research, evaluate, and implement ways to reduce freight spend and improving service levels
  • Expand our network of freight vendors, evaluate performance, and provide vendors with performance feedback
  • Locate, research and evaluate potential new transportation vendors
  • Cost effectively negotiate flatbed, container and LTL trucking rates for both spot and contract business
  • Locate, research and evaluate potential new transportation vendors
  • Continually develop and maintain relationships with new transportation partners, shippers, receivers, customers
  • Track shipments from pick up to delivery, notify appropriate parties of all shipment details
  • Consistently update load status report
  • Accurately enter purchase orders to transportation vendors
  • Collaborate with the Customer Service department to forecast shipments
  • Prepare and maintain metrics, reports and process documentation
  • Classify all BOLs to ensure shipment accuracy
  • Resolve problems concerning transportation, warehouse or customer issues
  • Ensure carrier compliance with company policies or procedure for product transit or delivery



  • 5+ years’ experience in Logistics, Freight Transportation or Bachelor’s in Supply Chain Logistics or related field
  • Prior dispatch or broker experience
  • Initiative and heightened sense of urgency to work proactively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong math skills
  • Resourcefulness and creativity in problem solving
  • Effective, concise communication in person, on the phone and in writing
  • Ability to organize, plan, prioritize and execute on multiple tasks under dynamic time constraints
  • Comfort with bringing potential issues to light and challenging the status quo
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • ERP experience a plus, high level of comfort with technology
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and also excel and contribute as an individual
  • Experience in the steel or metal industry or service center industry preferred
